Coal industry lashes out at Greenpeace campaign

THE chief executive of the Australian Coal Association Nikki Williams has hit out at Greenpeace and other green groups proposing action to disrupt the coal industry.
Dr Williams was commenting on reports this week that Greenpeace and other green groups were trying to raise funds for a campaign called "Stopping the Australian Coal Export Boom".

"They have outlined a very detailed and sophisticated plan for co-ordinated activity involving a number of green groups that is designed to disrupt and delay the coalmining industry," she said on the Australian Business program on Sky Business.

"We are concerned about it because it shows a very high level of planning."

Dr Williams said it was particularly worrying that the groups were proposing to target the infrastructure supporting the coal industry such as road and rail.

The news of the campaign has evoked a strong response from the federal government. Treasurer Wayne Swan has called the campaign "completely irrational".

But Australian Greens leader Bob Brown has said that he is prepared to support the campaign.
