Nationals Failed Farmers, Says Tony Windsor

INDEPENDENT MP Tony Windsor has accused the Nationals of failing to protect sensitive farming land from coal and coal-seam gas projects.
Mr Windsor yesterday defended the regulations he secured from his trade-off with the Gillard government on the mining tax, declaring projects could only proceed now if the best scientific advice determined they would not have an impact on underground water resources.

"The National Party had numerous opportunities to strengthen the mining approval process while they held the balance of power in the Howard government, and yet they didn't do anything," Mr Windsor said yesterday.

He hit back at comments from some Nationals MPs that his deal with Julia Gillard was a "dud".
