Ports, industry oppose Great Barrier Reef controls

Port operators are accusing international bureaucracies ― namely the UN's World Heritage commission ― of imposing their “crusading cultures” on the Australian economy, according to a report by The Australian.

Port operators and industry are pushing back hard against demands by the UN's environmental arm that new controls on coal and gas port expansions be imposed around the Great Barrier Reef.

Ports Australia chief executive David Anderson said greater controls, and bureaucracy, are unnecessary, while mining magnate Clive Palmer accused the UN's environment arm of being influenced by “international environmental groups which are dominated by Europe,” according to The Australian.
