Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake disputes article in Rolling Stone magazine

Oklahoma City-based natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp. is defending itself against a story in an upcoming issue of Rolling Stone magazine that the company contends has multiple inaccuracies.

The article, "The Big Fracking Bubble: The Scam Behind the Gas Boom," will appear in the March 15 edition, but already is available online. In the story, journalist Jeff Goodell begins by noting that Chesapeake CEO Aubrey McClendon tried to impress him with a $400 bottle of wine during an interview. Goodell goes on to describe Chesapeake's huge of amount of debt and its strategies on using land for drilling and for "flipping" for profit. He also quotes sources on the alleged dangers of "fracking," a process the company and others use to get trapped gas out of shale formations.

Chesapeake has issued a long rebuttal to sections of the article.
