Gateway plan panned across the board



Hunter Valley vignerons, the horse industry, farmers and even the mining industry are criticising a new land use policy released by the New South Wales Government saying it falls far short of what was promised.

The Draft Strategic Land Use Plan released yesterday identifies land of high agricultural value and stipulates that mining and coal seam gas proposals in those areas will be subject to a new independent approval process.

But cabinet will have the power to bypass the new "gateway" approval process, which has outraged groups including the Farmers Association and the State Opposition.

Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association President Andrew Margan is not impressed.

"All we were after is some certainty about what we are doing now in our industry," he said.
