Coal Seam Gas (CSG) mining poses a considerable threat to Victoria

While many people are aware of the threats posed by CSG, they may not know that Victoria is facing a potential massive expansion of the fossil fuel industry across the state.

Many companies want to use hydraulic fracturing (also known as fracking) to draw gas from seams of coal in Victoria. Fracking blasts a mixture of water, sand and chemicals deep under ground. In the USA, up to 596 chemicals make up ‘fracking fluid’, many of which are potentially very dangerous (including hydrochloric acid) if those chemicals contaminate water supplies (there are already confirmed instances of carcinogenic chemicals contaminating water near fracking sites in Queensland).

As Victoria faces a wave of exploration licenses for coal seam gas (CSG), new coal operations, and shale gas, there is a growing community opposition to this spreading industry.

The Coalition Government in New South Wales has already introduced a moratorium – preventing any fracking – until the scientific research can be done to assure everyone that no one will be put at risk.

  1. you know, victoria was a very geologically unstable bit of land once, and there are some [loopy] theories that some volcanic activity could soon be coming their way, and with this proposed mining, it could be a lot sooner than they think!
