Campbell Newman attempts to avoid exposure on coal seam gas

Yesterday's announcement that the chairman of the Christmas Creek/Tamrookum branch of the LNP has resigned over Campbell Newman's "intentionally deceitful" position on coal seam gas has highlighted the LNP leader's vulnerability on this issue.

The branch chairman, George Andrew, said LNP headquarters had refused to allow the branch to pass a motion calling for the region to be protected from coal seam gas.

Lock the Gate Alliance president, Drew Hutton, accused Mr Newman of doing anything to avoid talking about coal seam gas in the hope that he could be elected without having to have a clear position on the issue.

"I have invited Mr Newman to speak at a Lock the Gate forum for candidates in the seat of Ashgrove next Monday but he has refused," Mr Hutton said.

"He won't front up to landowners anywhere to discuss these issues properly and now we hear that he won't even allow his own party branches to debate the issue before the election.

"We are very disturbed by these developments and I call on the LNP to make its position clear well before the election so people who care about protecting rural Queensland from this mining and gas onslaught can work out if they still want to vote for the LNP."

Mr Hutton said the lock the Gate Alliance has written to all the political parties asking them for responses to a questionnaire on coal and coal seam gas. He has asked for their responses by this Friday.
