Australia: Time to put the brakes on

JILL Morrison says Australia needs to put the brakes on and adopt a cautious, go-slow approach to coal seam gas (CSG) development, before it’s too late.
And she’s seen enough to know.
Ms Morrison (pictured) heads up the Powder River Basin Resource Council which represents about 1000 landholders who united in 1973 to deal with the impacts of mining activities on their farms and water resources.
“I can’t emphasise it enough,” she said.
“It can’t be this crazy, head-on gold rush mentality because Australia’s agricultural resources will be ruined – as they have been ruined here.
“You will lose your water, you will lose your farmland and you will lose your productive land for future use.
“You will risk losing what’s sustainable to make a living in the future, for the sake of making a short-term buck.
“Australia has to get control of what’s really important and protect that resource – and do it in way that goes slow and is carefully developed.
“But forget the fast buck, because you are going to get screwed.”
