Taree mayor questions MidCoast

GREATER Taree City mayor Paul Hogan will seek to question MidCoast Water further over its acceptance and disposal of water from a dam in close proximity to some of Gloucester’s coal seam gas exploratory wells.

At the same time as the mayor seeks a more detailed explanation, Manning Alliance announced yesterday it has authorised the Environmental Defenders Office to write to the NSW Environment Protection Authority to request a proper investigation of the situation.

The Alliance claimed yesterday it had “mounting evidence” and felt a legal obligation to take the action it has.

Cr Hogan, a city council delegate to the water and sewerage county council, said yesterday he had further questions and wanted further assurances from MidCoast Water about its recent treatment of water from a dam on a Gloucester Coal property at Stratford.

He hoped to raise the issue at MidCoast Water’s next meeting, next Tuesday, he said.
One of the questions he will ask is “whether (the action) complies with the Environmental Protection Authority process”.
