Residents urge CSG moratorium vote

Wellington Shire residents at a meeting last night called for their council to vote for a moratorium on coal and gas exploration.

The Bass Coast and South Gippsland councils have already approached the Victorian Government to call for a moratorium.

Representatives from the community, Friends of the Earth , Wellington council and Exxon Mobil were at the meeting last night.

Esso's Longford gas plant is one of the shire's biggest ratepayers.

One of the organisers of the meeting, Brian Hunt, says people want more information on the effects of coal seam gas (CSG) exploration on the environment and the community.

"Can we just stop and people wanted a pause I guess and people wanted an opportunity to sit back and say, 'these things get out of hand' before exploration turns to mining," he said.
