'Foolish' to ignore concerns on CSG

COAL seam gas (CSG) mining and exploration has decimated farming regions in rural NSW and QLD and could destroy prime farmland in other parts of Australia, despite unknown impacts on underground water supplies, according to Australian Greens Senator Larrisa Waters.

The Greens mining and environment spokesperson says over recent years, many CSG mining development projects have rolled out in her home State of QLD and warns there’s more coming for other States.

“The main problem is that we still lack an understanding of what its long term impacts are,” she said.

“When we’ve got folks like the National Water Commission, the CSIRO and many expert hydrologists all saying, ‘actually we don’t really understand what its going to do to the Great Artesian Basin’, I just can’t believe the States and the Feds are rushing head-long into it, especially when there’s this expert acknowledgement of an absence of information about long term impacts.
