Govt under pressure for mining law overhaul

PRESSURE is building on the NSW government to overhaul the Mining Act, ahead of a stakeholder meeting set down for next Wednesday.

The stakeholder group – set up by the government to guide its promised Statewide land use policy – has been plagued by dissension between participants and government representatives.

Six weeks ago NSW Farmers threatened to walk away unless the Government delivered on pre-election commitments to address land use conflict and protect resources such as water.

Meantime, the State is becoming a tinderbox of anger with protests at various mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sites; the latest a spontaneous community blockade against AGL at Gloucester this week.

And small rural hamlets such as Baerami and Bylong Valley are fighting to have their voices heard above the political din, with the government scrambling for solutions.
