Queensland releases new Code of Practice

The Bligh Government has released a new Code of Practice to ensure the highest environmental and safety standards of coal seam gas wells over their lifetime and beyond.

Minister for Employment, Skills and Mining Stirling Hinchliffe said the new Code of Practice, which will apply to all CSG wells drilled from January next year, sets out the acceptable standards required to ensure long-term well integrity, containment of gas and protection of groundwater resources.

"The Code provides more detailed requirements and guidance for well construction and well management, and safety requirements for workers," Mr Hinchliffe said.

The Code provides for mandatory and good industry practice for well design and construction to withstand production zone pressures, routine well maintenance and ground movement throughout the life of the well.
