THE US state of Colorado will require energy companies to disclose the concentrations of chemicals in hydraulic fracturing - a method of exploiting underground gas deposits that is also causing concern in Australia.
Rules approved by Colorado regulators, to take effect in April, will also ask drillers to make public some information about ingredients considered trade secrets.
Also known as “fracking”, hydraulic fracturing has been suspended in NSW, but is used in coal-seam gas mining in other Australian states. A Senate committee recently called for a moratorium on all future CSG projects in the Great Artesian Basin in Queensland and NSW because of fears of water contamination.
The guidelines in Colorado are similar to those required by a first-in-the-nation law passed in Texas this year but go further by requiring the concentrations of chemicals to be disclosed.
