Coal seam gas exploration by Santos in the Pilliga Forest near Narrabri is discharging polluted coal seam gas water into the Bohena Creek system which is part of the Murray-Darling Basin, according to independent test results released today by environment groups.
Santos slammed for attempting to shift water blame to farmers
Environment group Friends of the Earth has slammed coal seam gas company Santos for trying to shift the blame for its own actions in polluting streams in the Pilliga Forest onto farmers.
Data released earlier today by environment groups shows that water extracted by Santos during coal seam gas exploration has major water quality problems despite being treated with reverse osmosis. This water is being discharged directly into the Bohena Ck system in the Pilliga Forest.
In its response earlier this morning, Santos stated that:
"It's worth pointing out I think that the New South Wales Government has also, under its Office of Water, identified for some time that there are high nitrate levels in the Namoi river and has attributed those to the agricultural activities in the region".
