Greens throw support behind CSG blockade

NSW Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon has thrown her support behind farmers blockading a dairy farm north of Newcastle.

Farmers gathered at the property outside Gloucester on Monday afternoon after coal seam gas company AGL began bringing equipment onto the property.

Ms Rhiannon, who visited the protesters, said that about 40 farmers had assembled at the farm by Tuesday afternoon.

"These blockades are very important, not just for the local community but right across Australia.
"We need to bring a balance here between mining operations and protection of water resources and farming land."

Lock the Gate spokesman Drew Hutton said farmers on surrounding land want independent water and seismic studies done before they will allow AGL onto the property.
