THE coal seam gas industry mounted a strong defence of its actions yesterday, claiming it had spent about $10 billion, most of it in Australia, and created about 9000 jobs.
It also backed its environmental controls and standards and vowed that it could operate to the benefit of Queensland.
At the Queensland Gas Conference yesterday, Treasurer Andrew Fraser labelled the industry as a once-in-200-year opportunity.
Mr Fraser said it was helping to create a "meat and three veg" economy compared with the sugar hit of the credit binge.
