COFFS Harbour City Council has voted unanimously against coal seam gas (CGS) mining in the local area.

A motion was put to council on July 12 by Councillor Mark Graham, moving that Council: Oppose coal seam gas exp-loration and mining in the Coffs Harbour Local Government Area (LGA) because of the unacceptable risks to our water catchments, groundwater, agricultural industries, natural environment and human health; write to the Premier of NSW informing him of Council's position and seeking a ban on Coal Seam Gas Mining and Exploration in the Clarence-Moreton Basin and across the North Coast; write to our local members of parliament (both state and federal) seeking support for Council's position; and support other Councils in NSW in their opposition to Coal Seam Gas Mining.

The resulting vote was a unanimous endorsement for the motion.

"Coffs Harbour City Council has voted unanimously to ban or oppose coal seam gas mining in the Coffs Harbour LGA," Cr Graham said.

"This is a great outcome for our city. Our water supplies, our groundwater, our agricultural industries, our local environment and the health of our residents will now be protected against the toxic scourge of CSG mining.

"Our local agricultural and tourism industries are entirely dependent upon clean water; CSG mining causes lots of toxic contamination. The ban on CSG will help ensure the future of these important local industries."

Cr Graham thanked his fellow Councillors for their support of his motion and for "acting in the interests of our residents and for protecting our agricultural industries and the local environment".
