US study links coal-seam gas mining process to water pollution

OPPONENTS of coal-seam gas mining say Australia must do more to rein in its booming gas industry.
Their comments come in the wake of a landmark US study that explicitly links "fracking" to water pollution for the first time.

The study by the US Environmental Protection Agency found toxic contaminants in groundwater in the state of Wyoming were probably caused by the gas drilling process.

The draft findings, if upheld, put paid to repeated claims by the industry that there has never been a demonstrated case of contamination and could mark a turning point in the debate over "unconventional" gas mining.
