Our states of the nation in flux

BY THE time the next federal election is called the Gillard Government is likely to face four state governments in coalition hands - NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and probably Queensland.

For Labor the successive coalition state victories might be seen as evidence of a trend - steadily each state is taking the opportunity to abandon Labor.

But it might also bode well for Gillard. The state coalition governments' period in office gives voters time to assess their performances and determine whether they really are better able to deliver services.

In Victoria, for example, voters might note that despite all the talk of the Coalition's tighter fiscal management, the Baillieu Government chose to keep its election promises and blow out the deficit.

The leader of the federal Opposition, Tony Abbott, is caught in the same bind. If he were to keep his many expenditure promises he would jeopardise Australia's fiscal credibility.
