Mixed reaction to CSG moratorium

Gloucester Basin opponents of coal seam gas (CSG) mining are not reassured by the New South Wales Government CSG moratorium.

The State Government has extended a moratorium on CSG activity from the end of December 2011 until April 2012 and will also review fracking, a gas extraction method.

Gary Smith from the Barrington Gloucester Stroud Preservation Alliance says the extra three-month moratorium covers the Christmas period when there is no mining activity.

He says any scientific review needs to consider the Gloucester Basin's unique geology.
"It's still not being fully taken into consideration because it's not yet been fully understood," he said.
