Fraccing moratorium extended in NSW

The NSW Government has extended its moratorium on fraccing for the coal seam gas industry until next April.

The ban on the process, which involves pumping a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the coal seam to release the gas, was due to expire this month.

The government says it'll allow time for a review of existing standards and to develop technical guidelines.

CSG opponent Tim Duddy, from the Caroona Coal Action Group, says it's a wise move.

"That's the government's decision, whether that's long enough or not," he said.

"I don't necessarily think it's a stalling tactic, but I certainly think it is giving them some breathing space to do the science that they need to do."

The NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher has declined to comment to the ABC.
