CSG polluting Murray Darling: group

Coal seam gas water containing dangerous levels of ammonia, methane and cyanide is finding its way into the Murray Darling Basin, environmental groups say.

Prue Bodsworth from The Wilderness Society says that coal seam gas (CSG) exploration by Santos has seen polluted water discharged into the Bohena Creek system in the Pilliga Forest in north-western NSW.

Independent testing laboratory East West Enviro-Ag collected water samples from outlets into Bohena Creek and compared them with an upstream sample.

The results, released on Thursday, show elevated levels of ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, lithium, cyanide, bromide and boron around the discharge point.

Of particular concern are the ammonia levels, which are three times higher than the level allowed in drinking water and can make fish susceptible to bacterial infections.
