Water plan open for comment - but not on mining

A public meeting called this week to discuss the draft Mataranka Water Plan for the Tindall Aquifer became heated when the subject turned to mining.

Under the Water Act, mines can extract as much water as they want and it doesn't have to be included in an allocation plan.

That means mining operations could potentially reduce the amount of water left for other users.

The Mataranka Water Advisory Committee has been helping to shape to draft plan for the last few years.

But several members say they're after all that time they're surprised to learn that the plan can't restrict the amount of water taken for mining.
